MENTAL HEALTH

We have come so far, but we still consider physical health our primary health, such as heart health, blood pressure, cholesterol level, going to the doctor, and taking medication. Mental health is equally important and has a significant part of our lives that we often forget to care about it.

If we look at the numbers:
  1. About 1 in 3 Canadians will be affected by a Mental Illness in their lifetime (this number is more than the number of people who will be affected by a heart attack, diabetes).
  2. Mental illness affects all Canadians directly or indirectly through illness in a family member, friend, or colleague.
  3. Most mental illnesses occur during adolescence and young adulthood.
  4. Young people aged 15 to 24 are more likely to experience mental illness and/or substance use disorders than any other age group.
  5. Men have higher rates of addiction than women, while women have higher rates of mood and anxiety disorders.
  6. Youth have experienced the greatest declines since the pandemic began.
  7. Those experiencing poor mental health before COVID-19 were even more impacted by the pandemic, including those from the LGBTQ community.
  8. The stigma associated with mental illness limits the acceptance of mental illness, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of such illnesses.
  9. 47% of working Canadians consider their work to be the most stressful part of daily life and only 23% of Canadian workers feel comfortable talking to their employer about a psychological health issue.
  10. In 2019–2020, half of Canadians waited up to 1 month for ongoing counseling services in the community, while 1 in 10 waited more than 4 months.
  11. In some jurisdictions, wait times for mental health counseling services were longer for children and youth than for adults age 18 and older.

Several studies have demonstrated that people who have experienced mental illness during their lives may also have experienced substance use issues and vice versa. Mental health is also linked to many other problems, i.e. domestic violence, homelessness, unemployment, etc. Many trauma and Mental health issues start at an early or young age. What we can do to help out:

    1. To destigmatize mental illness, we can talk more openly about mental health, anxiety, depression, stress, etc.
    2. With proper resources, self-help tools, on-time & quality help, we can help individuals improve Mental Health and lead a better life.
At Move Me Foundation, we are in the process of developing all possible resources to empower you, motivate you, and help you feel like “YOURSELF” again. We promise you’ll not have to struggle alone.
